We supply media and corporate information solutions to the largest media groups in Britain and Ireland and have existing clients among top-tier law and professional services firms.

We're looking for a Senior Data Engineer to join our team. As our first dedicated data hire you will have a lot of influence on our evolution and a wide remit.

About the Role

Working closely with management, commercial and engineering teams to build mission-critical data resources, from pipelines to products, you will be a central contributor to the strategic development of the company at a time of rapid growth.

In this role you will design and implement technical solutions to support a range of Data and Software Engineering projects. You must be capable of solving a range of technical data challenges, each expecting you to assess the requirements, propose a solution and manage delivery.

These projects could require you to work alone, with other Engineers and/or Data Scientists, or as part of the wider Strategy team. Our business challenges are always unique.

The function leverages advanced technologies where expertise is required. The role requires an individual who is innovative and forward-looking. You'll be the kind of person who wants to try new things, and who is inquisitive in nature. You will be comfortable developing different approaches to a problem, as well as conducting small research projects to see what is possible with specific technologies.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • Take responsibility for the design and delivery of a range of technical data engineering projects, from small proof of concepts to building production data pipelines and integration with associated production systems or applications.
  • Define and implement best practices for data storage and serving, including schema design, data transformation, and query optimisation.
  • Manage and maintain technical cloud infrastructure related to data systems.
  • Design, build and maintain our data warehouse and pipelines/ETL processes.
  • Source, parse, cleanse and model new data sets.
  • Perform KPI reporting and monitoring, including anomaly detection.
  • Perform occasional ad hoc analyses to support business or other requirements.
  • Help establish and grow the data team.

You should have:

  • A Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or related field.
  • 3+ years experience in a similar role.
  • Expert knowledge of relational databases and SQL.
  • Experience building and maintaining data warehouses.
  • Excellent knowledge of core AWS tools (e.g. CloudFormation, CodePipeline, IAM, EC2, Lambda, etc.) as well as data specific tools like RDS, Redshift, Airflow, etc.
  • Expertise with at least one scripting language, e.g. Python. Proficiency with shell scripting (e.g. Bash) highly desirable.
  • Proficiency with Git and Git workflows.
  • Excellent knowledge of R or similar statistical computing language.
  • Excellent communication skills.

Experience with data analytics, big data environments, creating and/or consuming data APIs, or BI tools would be a plus.

You should be:

  • Highly flexible, open to change, and comfortable with ambiguity.
  • Detail-orientated with solid analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Willing to learn new technologies, techniques and information.
  • Able to communicate effectively with people at all levels, and to work with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Personable and confident, able to build relationships with partners/key stakeholders.
  • Resilient and calm under pressure.
  • Pro-active and initiative taking, able to manage projects and workload independently.

  • Competitive salary (DOE)
  • Generous holidays
  • Blended home/office working model and flexible hours
  • Home office allowance for remote work
  • Budget for ongoing professional development
