Position Summary:
Interlochen Arts Academy (IAA) seeks applicants for the position of Conductor of Wind Symphony (Academy), starting August 26, 2026. The successful candidate will lead the IAA Wind Symphony in monthly concerts (regular rehearsals/sectionals), coach chamber music, teach courses in conducting and/or other courses as assigned, and participate in multidisciplinary collaborative work and programming across campus
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Conduct the IAA Wind Symphony in rehearsals, sectionals, and concerts.
- Choose repertoire for all performances during the academic year, working in concert with Associate Director of Music for Classical Programs and the Director of Music.
- Create an exciting and challenging teaching and performing environment that fosters a successful learning atmosphere
- Provide appropriate grading, attendance and evaluations of student progress as required by the music division
- Communicate effectively with students, parents, colleagues, and administration
- Work alongside applied faculty and the Associate Director/Director of Music to recruit students to IAA.
- Represent Interlochen in professional organizations and maintain and develop close ties with feeder programs, schools, and instructors, as well as with college and university programs to facilitate the success of our students as they move into higher education.
- Respect the culture, diversity and rights of all students, their families and the community
Perform other duties as assigned
Work Environment:
Work is performed primarily in a standard office and classroom environment with extensive internal and external stakeholder contact
Requirements
Education:
The successful candidate must hold a minimum of a Master's degree in music or equivalent professional conducting experience required.
Experience:
- A teacher/conductor of national reputation with extensive experience working with bands in High School and/or University settings.
- Required qualifications include evidence of excellence as a conductor with demonstrated experience in repertoire curation and selection, interdisciplinary work, and the performance of a broad and diverse range of works.
- Five years experience as a minimum.
- Experience creating a learning environment that appropriately challenges students of varying levels.
- Experience as a conductor working with High School and/or University level students.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- An understanding of repertoire selection for concert band and chamber ensembles, working in concert with other stakeholders
- An understanding of appropriate audition preparation for students to enter college or conservatory
- Fluency in the use of technology tools for communication and music education is highly valued.
- Demonstrate respect for cultural, ethnic, spiritual, and linguistic diversity and values including differences in personal goals, lifestyle choices and varying family backgrounds and histories.
Equipment Familiarity:
- Comfortability with student learning management systems (Canvas) or willingness to learn about these systems.
